Chennai Taramani, January 31, 2025: A disturbing incident occurred this morning at the Madras University hostel , where students found worms in their breakfast idiyappam. The breakfast was served to students, but several of them found numerous worms within the dish.
Students immediately reported the issue to the boys’ hostel manager, Narayanan, at 8:30 AM. However, despite being informed of the problem, the food was still served until 9:30 AM without any action taken to stop the distribution of the food.
It was only after the girls’ hostel mess secretary intervened that the food was finally withdrawn. Upon further investigation, the mess secretary questioned the quality of the food, leading the girls’ hostel manager to explain that the idiyappam had been purchased the previous day. When the mess secretary examined the product, she found that it was in poor condition, with several packets containing ants. While the product had not expired, its quality was deemed unacceptable.
This incident has raised serious concerns about food safety, hygiene, and the university’s response protocol to student complaints.
